As I was telling you in one of my previous posts, during my burnout, I restarted reading. To me it felt like meditation.
And here is where I have to admit that I had a crush on Brene Brown. The way she writes it’s priceless. I love her style.
As a coincidence or not, the top 3 books I am going to share are all written by her. Below, I will share with you my main takeaways from her books and how they helped cope with and overcome burnout.

Dare to Lead, Brene Brown
This book became my guiding light and was my top fav one during my burnout journey. Brown’s insights into vulnerability as a strength resonated deeply with me, challenging the belief that leadership requires an impenetrable facade. Instead, she advocates for courage, empathy, and authenticity as the cornerstones of effective leadership.
At first glance, this book may seem as a guide and book for leaders. While it touches this part as well, the book is so much more than that and goes deep into the core of human beings. Here are a few things that resonated so much with me:
- Brown’s perspective on vulnerability transformed my understanding of leadership, encouraging me to embrace my authentic self and foster even more genuine connections with my team after my return, even in moments of uncertainty.
- Through her teachings, I learned that true leadership requires courage—the courage to speak up, to take risks, and to lead with integrity, even when faced with challenges.
- “Dare to Lead” provided invaluable guidance on navigating difficult conversations with grace and empathy, essential skills for addressing conflicts and preventing burnout-inducing tension in the workplace.
- Brown’s BRAVING framework illuminated the importance of trust and offered practical strategies for cultivating trust within my team, fostering an environment of psychological safety and support.
- By aligning my leadership with my core values, as Brown suggests, I found renewed purpose and clarity, mitigating the feelings of disillusionment and burnout that had previously plagued me. Once I returned, I remember gathering my team and organizing a workshop aligning together on what is important for us as a team and following through it.
- The book emphasized the importance of self-compassion and resilience in leadership, teaching me to recognize and address shame triggers and cultivate resilience in the face of adversity.
- Inspired by Brown’s insights, I began to lead not only with courage and vulnerability but also with a commitment to empowering and uplifting those around me, fostering a culture of support and growth within my team. As a small example, at the end of each day, I would send a “thank you” note to someone within the company who had made a contribution during that day (it doesn’t have to be something huge).
“Dare to Lead” is a roadmap for reclaiming joy and purpose in the midst of burnout, guiding you toward a more authentic and fulfilling approach to leadership and life.

Daring Greatly, Brene Brown
This is the book that made me truly see vulnerability as a major strength, allowing me to stay true to myself, to express the beautiful and less beautiful things going within me. It supported me to set healthy boundaries, without feeling guilty in the end, illuminating the transformative power of vulnerability with unparalleled clarity.
Here’s why this book resonated so deeply and helped me navigate through challenging times:
- Brown’s exploration of vulnerability as the cornerstone of authentic connection challenged my perceptions and inspired me to embrace vulnerability as a catalyst for growth and resilience. This is when I started to speak more about how I feel and share with my dear ones what I was going through.
- This book equips readers with the tools to recognize and overcome shame and guilt, fostering a sense of self-compassion and empowerment essential for navigating burnout. In my previous blog post I was telling you about guilt. Here is where I found resources to overcome it.
- It invites readers to cultivate wholehearted living by embracing vulnerability, authenticity, and imperfection. This paradigm shift empowered me to break free from the cycle of perfectionism and always willing to have things under control. Brown celebrates imperfection as a sign of courage and authenticity, challenging readers to let go of perfectionism and embrace their flaws as sources of strength and resilience.
- The notion that vulnerability is the birthplace of joy, creativity, and belonging, yet it’s often shunned due to fear of rejection or failure. Emphasizes the importance of self-worth and connection over external achievements. This insight provided me with a newfound sense of courage and purpose.
- By fostering empathy for ourselves and others, we can cultivate deeper connections and resilience, essential tools for navigating burnout with grace. The moment you develop empathy for yourself, the empathy you manifest towards others grows by default as well.
- Step into the arena of life, daring to be seen and embracing vulnerability as a pathway to authentic living.
- This book also helped me on setting and respecting boundaries, essential for protecting our well-being and preserving our authenticity in the face of burnout-inducing pressures.
“Daring Greatly” is a transformative journey toward self-discovery, resilience, and wholehearted living. It’s a reminder that vulnerability isn’t a weakness to be overcome but a source of strength to be embraced.

The gifts of Imperfection, Brene Brown
Perfectionism is by far the main root cause that led me to burnout. It just cultivates the mindset of never good enough. Regardless of how much effort you put in, regardless of how great the outcome is, regardless that you are a top performer, it is still not enough. You always seek perfection (whatever that may be or mean). You are in an ongoing race. You forget to celebrate your successes and achievements because you always want more. And you end up putting this pressure on those around your as well.
This book reshaped my perspective on self-acceptance, self-worth, resilience and authenticity.
Here’s are a few ideas that I liked the most:
- Embracing Imperfection as a source of strength rather than a flaw challenged my belief that I needed to be perfect to be worthy. I learned to embrace my imperfections and cultivate self-compassion.
- Authenticity Over Perfection: Brown encourages readers to let go of unrealistic standards and embrace their true selves with courage and compassion. She invites you to cultivate authenticity by letting go of who you think you should be and embrace who you truly are.
- Approaching life with courage, compassion, and connection, by embracing vulnerability and cultivating gratitude. By practicing gratitude daily, I found solace in even the hardest moments of burnout and learned to appreciate the beauty in life’s simple pleasures.
- Letting Go of Shame: Learn how to let go of shame and cultivate resilience. I learned that shame thrives in secrecy and silence, and by sharing my experiences with trusted others, I could lessen its grip on me, which I keep on doing even today and it works every single time. You feel a deep relief.
- Cultivating Self-Compassion: It is a key component of resilience. I learned to treat myself with the same kindness and understanding that I would offer to a friend in times of struggle. In the end, I am my closest friend, I spend the most time with myself, why wouldn’t I do it with myself as well?
- Letting Go of Comparison: Instead of comparing myself to others, I learned to celebrate my unique journey and embrace the beauty of my own story. Comparison robs us of joy and prevents us from fully embracing our true selves.
- Living with Purpose: The book teaches us that true belonging and worthiness come from embracing our imperfections and living authentically. Through self-discovery and self-acceptance, I found the courage to live a life of purpose and meaning, which I kept on building ever since.
“The Gifts of Imperfection” is a roadmap for reclaiming joy, resilience, and authenticity in the face of burnout. It’s a reminder that we are worthy of love and belonging exactly as we are, imperfections and all.
